I talked briefly on Friday about football / soccer ( It's nominally high not actually high).

Now really I don't know much about football. All I do know is that I don't watch it.

But I waded into a conversation the other day which made me realise there is one big gap in the market. Why isn't there a world cup for clubs?

The equivalent of the European Cup (in which nations play) is called the Champions league (in which clubs play) but there is no similar equivalent to the nations World Cup.

When I posed this question everyone said that there would be too many games. But I have a solution for that.

We only need 6 teams (Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, North America, South America)* A draw takes place which pits each team with one other team. So there are 3 matches. There are no replays you just keep going until somebody wins. Then there are three teams who go through. You ned three more games like this:

A vs B
A vs C
B vs C

Only one team can win two matches. And if unfortunately no clear winner emerges you simply declare joint winners. Think it would work?

Well probably not. Perhaps the better option is to say that you get points like most goals scored, fewest cards issued and so on and out of the three winning teams only two teams go on to a single final. You could run the whole tournament in one week!

The only problem with the whole thing is if Antarctica gets it's act together.

* A guy I met once suggested that the names of the continents exactly explained why Europe was the dominant power in the world. He said, "Listen Europe is the only continent with a different first letter. America (North and South), Asia, Africa, Australasia, Antarctica, they all start with A. And that's why we won". I asked him if he could explain America's current dominance. "America? America," he said, "America is dead and gone the American people are almost extinct, America is being run by Europeans. That's what you have to remember".
