I recently met Nancy Lam, an Indonesian chef who has a restaurant in London, and it was - without a doubt the greatest restaurant experience I've ever had. I have been to some fabulous places, and they may (sorry Nancy) have had better food, but none beat this restaurant for sheer overall greatness.
First up the food is fabulous. Really something incredible. It did the thing that all great restaurants should do, it redefined the way that I consider all other examples of the food you eat there. Every singe thing I ate was the absolute best I have ever eaten of the type. And my only drawback is that I am used to other types of food and therefore consider them slightly nicer. And that is much more my responsibility than hers. She did that amazing thing which is to deliver a perfect meal. And I got the distinct feeling that it would probably not have mattered what we had ordered.
So yes. My favourite food is still Hibiscus in Ludlow, but my favourite meal is now by far and away at Enak Enak in London.
And what is the difference? Well you know those times when you could be at the most rubbish place (food wise) but the company and the situation and atmosphere just are so fantastic that you have a fabulous time anyway? Well this was that situation but better because one of the principal contributors to conversation was the fabulous Nancy herself and just as importantly was the fact that the food was so good.
