Yesterday I was talking about a new political party who's only aim is to change the way that elections are run.

Now lots of people have come up with lots of methods of getting more people to vote. Things like postal voting and e-voting and so on. These cause their own problems and don't really offer any solutions.

Other schemes talk about "real democracy" where people can vote on every issue. So that there are lots of mini-referendums. This doesn't really work either because we want to pay people to run the country for us. We don't want to do it ourselves. We want them to do it for us, but we want to interview them first and pick the right person for the job. We don't want to be doing the job as well as our own.

So what's the solution. We'll here's my suggestion. It requires two changes. The first of which is really simple and the second of which is more complicated.

First up we add to every ballot a "none of the above" box. These votes are counted and if "non of the above" wins then a new election in that borough is called. That way charismatic interesting politicians would have to come forward to solve the problem.

The second idea is this. There is a website called political compass which asks you a whole load of questions. The answers place you on a political compass. You are then able to compare your position to the estimated position of real politicians past and present.

My idea is to force any politician who wants to stand to answer a series of questions like this and then allow anyone who wants to vote to do the same test. You can then see how each politician voted for every question if you like or more simply you can look at which one holds the most similar views to you. In this way it will become really easy to see if your views have drifted away from the party that you always used to vote for, or if your local MP has different views from the national party message.

These two steps together would really change the political system. Part of the problem today is that so many people say they can't tell the difference between the candidates because they are so slippery at answering questions.

Perhaps these people are simply deciding based on who has the nicest hair or maybe they're just not voting.

So to sum up: "don't vote for me, it's the way forward".
